ORC Week 5: Ah-mazing tile

November 5, 2015

This has been a huge week! I swear I almost had tears in my eyes last weekend when I realized that I could no longer see any of the studs in my walls! With only one week to go in the One Room Challenge, I’m feeling the burn and I won’t lie, its difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel! Major progress has been made this week, but there’s still so much to be done to get this bathroom reveal ready!

wk 5 progress

One major breakthrough I made this week was finalizing the tile for my shower. With SO many ah-mazing options out there, it was really difficult for me to make these selections. I went in to Creekside Tile in Toronto and these guys really sorted me out! The owner, Enrique went above and b e y o n d. It seems I may have procrastinated a tad and slightly over estimated how much time I had left in this challenge. Well, it turned out that a few of my fave selects were on backorder! So being the awesome guy he is, Enrique managed to get my tile custom made…and it will be ready, just in the nick of time! Here are a few of the mosaics I hummed and hawed over

After much contemplation, I went with option a! Call me crazy, but every time I went back and looked at this fan tile, I smiled!  Honestly, there’s something about the pattern that makes me happy!

Remember… I’m planning to pair this mosaic floor tile with a white bevelled wall tile in a herringbone pattern.  I can’t wait to see how it all comes together…the transformation is going to be unreal!

I’ve been following some of the other ORC’ers pretty closely, including my pal and colleague Lisa Canning!  I’d say that most of the other participants are def in much better shape than I am at this stage, but it looks like it’s going to be a mad dash to the finish line for many of us! Check out the official ORC participants here and the guest participants here.

Thanks for following along!

ORC week 4: love at first sight

October 30, 2015

When I started designing my bathroom for the One Room Challenge, I knew that I wanted to figure out a way to incorporate black finishes into my design. If you’re visiting the blog for the first time, thanks for tuning in…you can get caught up on my ORC bathroom project here.

Many of you will probably agree that when you think of black hardware or fixtures in a room, it’s generally in a pretty modern space. Since the rest of my house is fairly transitional in style, I feared that my most loved finish wouldn’t work in my new bathroom. But after doing a bit of research, and much to my surprise, I found the finish making an appearance in kitchens and baths of all different styles!

Shown above are two traditional bathrooms (not mine) that are rocking black fixtures.  After seeing these inspiration pics, I totally convinced myself that black will work!

My next challenge was to pick my fixtures! I visited half a dozen stores and I’m pretty sure I looked at every single faucet available in a black finish! Here are a few of my faves:

shower kits

taps

In my search I stumbled upon the BEAUTIFUL faucet collection designed by Jason Wu for Brizo, which has an amazing selection of fixtures in a matte black finish. It was definitely love at first sight! Wu’s designs are stunning; they’re sleek, sophisticated and modern, yet their rounded lines and edges allow for them to work with a range of styles and spaces, including my bathroom!! Plus the quality and bang for your buck is unmatched by any of the other manufacturers I came across.  I have to say this one was a pretty painless decision for me! I decided to go with the Odin Round Raincan Showerhead/Odin Slide Bar with Handshower (#1) and the Odin Two Handle Widespread faucet (#4). Can you tell how excited I am???

I can’t believe we only have two weeks to go til’ the big reveal of the One Room Challenge!! My fellow ORC-ers are turning out some pretty fab designs so far… be sure to check out what the official participants have been up to, as well and the guest participants!

when two become one

October 15, 2015

As I announced last week, I’m diving head first into the world of blogging and taking part in the One Room Challenge as a guest participant! Over 6 weeks (5 remaining), I will transform a bathroom in my house in much need of meeting its other half: the shower. As I explained in my post last week, the bathroom shower was partially framed when our house was renovated, but for whatever reason it was built into the laundry room space, rather than the bathroom! In the process of the reno, I’m also going to take the opportunity to do a mini refresh on the existing space and make it a room that truly brings me  j o y!

We really hit the ground running in our first week… starting with demolition of the wall separating the laundry —> bathroom.

Unfortunately, demo didn’t stop at the dividing wall. Once the first wall was down, our contractor discovered a few issues and felt it was necessary to remove all of the drywall from the shower space to realign a few studs and ensure some reinforcements were put into place… it seems the original builder may have cut a few corners when this bathroom was put in a few years ago. Not a major change in plans and it will actually make life a lot easier for the electrician and plumber, so not a biggie.  {If you’ve done the reno thing you’ll know there are  u s u a l l y  fun surprises that pop up in renovating an old house…so always a good idea to have a contingency fund on reserve, even for small projects, just in case!}

So, now that the demo is complete and the boys are working on repairs and framing/drywall…It’s time to get down to business and pick some finishes! Check out what I have in mind…

pixlr week 2 mood board-4I must admit, that I’m feeling the burn of this challenge already! I warned you, when it comes to making decisions in my own space…I’m the WORST! I keep flip-flopping on colours, tiles and especially between matte black finish fixtures and champagne bronze! Thoughts??

I’m already so impressed and inspired by both the official One Room Challenge participants and my fellow guest-ies. I’ll be making some serious decisions this week, so can’t wait to break it all down with you next Thursday! #oneroomchallenge
